SNAP Benefits

What is SNAP?

SNAP — formerly known as food stamps — provides monthly benefits that help people buy food. Benefits are loaded onto an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, which works like a debit card at most grocery stores, supercenters, and farmers markets.

SNAP is the nation’s largest nutrition assistance program. In an average month, SNAP helps more than 40 million people afford a nutritious diet.

What can SNAP buy?

SNAP benefits can be used to buy:

  • Fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, and poultry
  • Dairy products
  • Breads and cereals
  • Snack foods and non-alcoholic beverages
  • Seeds and plants that produce food

SNAP benefits cannot be used to buy:

  • Alcoholic beverages, tobacco, or vitamins
  • Hot foods or foods that will be eaten in the store
  • Non-food items like pet food, cleaning supplies, or hygiene products

How to apply

You can apply online, by mail, or in person at your local office. Most applicants receive a decision within 30 days. If you are in immediate need of food, you may qualify for expedited benefits within 7 days.

To start your application, you will need:

  1. Proof of identity (driver’s license, passport, or other government ID)
  2. Proof of income (recent pay stubs, employer letter, or benefit award letter)
  3. Proof of residency (utility bill, lease agreement, or bank statement)
  4. Social Security numbers for all household members applying

After you apply

After you submit your application, a caseworker will contact you to schedule an interview. The interview can usually be done by phone. After the interview, you will receive a letter telling you whether you are approved and how much your monthly benefit will be.

If approved, your EBT card will arrive within 5–7 business days.
